Bio
Craig Hanson (b. 1987 Monterey, California) creates large sculptural work dealing human perception through diverse formal and material explorations. His current studio practice investigates process-based mixed media sculpture employing painterly language to render an active emotional landscape. The viewer becomes aware of themselves as an object among art objects sharing a conjoined environment. Ultimately deepening their metaphysical introspection amongst oneself and our cosmos.
He is the recipient of numerous academic awards and scholarships including the Jose Puig Award, the James Bradford Scholarship, and the Carolyn M Wilson Scholarship. He received his BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University where he studied Sculpture and Extended Media. Upon graduating he worked as a studio assistant for numerous artists in Richmond, Virginia. Craig received a University Graduate Fellowship at University of South Florida where he taught beginning and intermediate undergraduate sculpture courses and received his MFA of Studio Art in 2016. His work has shown nationally at institutions such as the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL, the Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa, FL, and the Anderson Gallery in Richmond, VA.
Craig currently lives in Missoula, Montana where he works as a Product Designer for Cro Medical to support his artistic endeavors and his outdoor adventures.
